I had my first yoga class in 2007 at a fitness center. At the time, I was starting my journey with the aging processs, and my usual strategies of excessive exercise and use of substances was no longer having the effect of relieving me of my anxiety, insomnia, and the constant emotional state of being angry at everyone, or just feeling despair and fear running in the back of my head—always. I remember the frustration and inability to lay still and relax during the last 5 minutes of the class during the Savasana, but I did experience a better night’s sleep and a better run the next day. It’s still a bit of a mystery to me that it would take another 5 years for me to finally surrender to the Truth—Yoga is a magical, transformative, and healing practice that keeps me emotionally balanced, mentally sane, and physically healthy.
By 2013, I knew that I had to do something to change the way I was living my life. I was still running attending a twice a week yoga class, but I was not well emotionally or mentally. I could not seem to have a positive thought, and even though I felt relatively physically fit, I was still utilizing too much alcohol to cope with life's challenges. I know now that I had hit what many call the proverbial “bottom” in terms of how I felt inside my body and about my life in general. Nothing I had been doing for the previous 27 years (since about the age of 16) to “feel better” was working anymore. So, when the opportunity to attend an information session on a yoga teacher training course presented itself, I decided to invest the time and money into what was promised as a “journey toward self-transformation.” I took the training for my own benefit, and never thought that I could be a yoga teacher—until the end of the 9-month 200-hour course. And while it was just the beginning of my healing journey, it did shift my my consciousness enough and in ways that now, over 15 years later, I’m sure saved my life. In the last 10 years, I have received over 1,000 hours of combined training in yoga, sound healing, breath, energy (Reiki), and meditation practices. I have been teaching and sharing what I know with individuals and groups for 7 years.
